A model does not become responsible because it has a fairness score or a disclaimer. Responsibility depends on who is affected, which decision is made, what evidence is collected, who can challenge the result, and what happens when the system is wrong. Start with the decision and the people around it, then decide whether ML belongs in the workflow at all.
Consider a scholarship-screening model. A false negative can remove an opportunity, historical labels may encode unequal access, and a high aggregate accuracy can conceal severe errors for a smaller group. The responsible question is not simply “Is the model accurate?” It is “Does this complete process create justified, contestable decisions under the conditions where it will be used?”
